Xiaomi Redmi Note 7

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7

The Redmi Note 7 may not offer the 48MP camera, but it does offer a refined experience that won't let you down thanks to a Snapdragon 660 SoC under the hood. Add to that the new gradient colours and a vibrant new display, the Redmi Note 7 is one of the best phones to buy under Rs 15,000. The Redmi Note 7 has similar hardware as the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 but with a smaller 4,000mAh battery. The performance, as a result is quite similar to Asus' offering. The mid-range SoC used in the Redmi Note 7 is apparently clocked at the peak frequency supported by the CPUs which Xiaomi claims offers better performance as compared to other Snapdragon 660-powered phones. On benchmarks, the Redmi Note 7 sits on top of other Snapdragon 660-powereds smartphones available in India. The camera performance is arguably better. The 12MP sensor makes for good sharable photos while the front camera takes good enough selfies. The primary camera has AI scene detection and a night mode that uses multi-frame processing to reduce noise and improve details. The Redmi Note 7 is also a good phone design-wise. It's protected with Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides and comes with a premium glass finish. The phone however looks the same as the other Redmi Note phones and they’re very difficult to tell apart. The phone runs on MIUI 10 which has the bad reputation of serving ads in the UI but overall, it’s quite polished and optimised.

Xiaomi Redmi Y3

Xiaomi Redmi Y3

With a high-res 32MP selfie camera, the Redmi Y3 establishes as a selfie-centric phone in the market. But it's more than that with an equally capable of dual camera on the back and decent performance thanks to a Snapdragon 632 SoC, especially in gaming. It also manages to look good with gradient colours and a waterdrop notch display. Between the Redmi Y3 and the Redmi Note 7, the Redmi Y3 does have a better selfie camera but the performance doesn't match up to the Redmi Note 7 Pro. The Snapdragon 632 is visibly slower than the Snapdragon 660. As a result, this phone is good mostly for selfie lovers. The dual rear cameras are decent and is assisted by AI scene recognition and comes with a night mode. Design wise, it looks a lot like the Redmi Note series phones, but with a more curved back and a plastic body. The Redmi Y3 is also surprisingly good at handling games like PUBG Mobile. Out of the other budget phones, this is perhaps the best for games like PUBG Mobile.

Realme 3

Realme 3

With a premium design, the Realme 3 doesn't like a budget phone at all. It's also quite responsive thanks to a MediaTek Helio P70 SoC. You get a dual camera setup on the back capable of offering portrait mode, and a nearly bezel-less display thanks to a waterdrop notch design. A triple slot for a dedicated SD card sweetens the deal even more. The Realme 3 should be bought for a premium design but it might not be quite durable with a plastic body. During our review, it was quick to get scratched. There is a transparent case that's provided in the box. As for performance, the Realme 3 has the highest scores in benchmark scores. The UI is also quite refined and looks far more aesthetic than before. The phone's display is also pretty good and watching videos and playing games feel nice. The Realme 3's camera is the only thing holding the phone back from becoming the best budget phone. The photos are mired with noise in low light and in day light, it tends to boost the contrast and saturation to make photos look palatable. It also lacks expected sharpness.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is just like the Redmi Note 5 Pro, but with stock Android. The same hardware that makes the Xiaomi phone on the best performers at that price, is also there on the Zenfone Max Pro M1. But the flavour is stock Android 8.1 Oreo. Apart from that you get a sturdy build quality and decent 16-megapixel dual cameras at the back. Easily one of the best phones under Rs 15,000. The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 sold like hot cakes last year and was one of the most popular devices in the mid-range segment. The stock Android interface was backed by regular updates introducing new features as well as security patches. In fact, it's also scheduled to get the update to Android 9 Pie. The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 houses a large 5,000mAh battery along with a dual camera setup encased in a metal body. On the front is a standard LCD panel with no notch. Sitting in 2019, it only makes sense to buy the phone if the budget is tight and you require a phone with long battery life, decent performance and stock Android.

Realme U1

Realme U1

Also a selfie-centric phone, the Realme U1 has a 25MP selfie shooter capable of taking HDR selfies. Other than that, there's the same MediaTek Helio P70 that's also there on the Realme 3 ensuring stable performance. The Realme U1 is for those who prefer a good front camera without compromising on the performance and the budget. The Realme U1 is the answer to the Redmi Y-series and focuses more on the selfie camera than the rear camera. That said, the Realme U1 is also quite capable of delivering good performance. It's quite fast to recognise scenes in the camera and apps and games load relatively faster on the phone. The display is also quite big to enjoy movies and TV shows, but it lacks the DRM certification to stream content in HD. The Realme U1's claim to fame is a high-res selfie camera that does pixel binning to get better photos. The battery life is also pretty good with over a day's usage guaranteed in a full charge.

Samsung Galaxy M10

Samsung Galaxy M10

The Samsung Galaxy M10 brings an ultra wide-angle camera to the under Rs 10,000 segment making it quite lucrative. There’s also a primary camera that performs good when the lighting is optimum. However, an old chipset means you won't get the best performance, but it still works decently well thanks to optimisations Samsung has put in place. The Galaxy M10 also features a screen that almost stretches all the way to the edges thanks to a waterdrop notch and is one of the best when compared to other phones in that price range. The Galaxy M10 is a unique device. The wide-angle camera sets it apart in the budget segment, but it can't really compete as an all-rounder as the performance is crippled thanks to an older chipset. The M10 does offer good battery life of over a day, however and for a budget phone buyer, good battery and decent cameras are fairly important. it can also handle casual games quite well while the usual social media apps works just fine. However, don't go expected fast multi-tasking or heavy tasks like photo editing and the likes.

Asus Zenfone Max M2

Asus Zenfone Max M2

The Asus Zenfone Max M2 is brand new and has the new Snapdragon 632 for firepower. The phone also has a big 4,000mAh battery and a notched display which looks pretty good. On the back is a 8MP camera while on the front you get a 5MP shooter for selfies. The Zenfone Max M2 is actually just as fast as the newly announced Redmi Y3, and also offers a stock-Android like experience with a stripped down ZenUI. The Asus Zenfone Max M2 may have a mouthful of a name, but it's quite compact in size and will be appreciated by those looking for a smaller phone to fit their pocket. Don't buy it expecting high performance though as the Snapdragon 632 isn't very fast. But it's quite battery efficient and ensures the device lasts over a day and more. The Asus Zenfone Max M2 also offers a single camera on the back that offers portrait mode via software. It's just about average in imaging and will only take good photos when the light is optimum. Too harsh or too low light will mess up the result. The Zenfone Max M2 is a good entry-level smartphone for the first-time users who are coming from feature phones. To that effect, the Asus Zenfone Max M2 is able to handle apps like Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram just fine.

Realme 2

The Realme 2 has a good-looking diamond-glass design with a notched display up front. The rear panel houses a dual camera unit and a fingerprint sensor while under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset. The variant under Rs 10,000 comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. It’s a handy phone for someone who isn’t a power user. The Realme 2 was quite a dazzler back when it launched. The specifications put it as a budget phone but the design was anything but basic. However, the durability of the phone might not be as high as there's generous use of plastic and laminated glass to achieve the premium design. Performance wise, the Realme 2 delivered okayish performance which is expected in the budget segment. It can handle casual games and heavy games like PUBG Mobile in low settings. But the camera, at least till last year, offered decently good images. They were a bit too saturated, yes, but there is good clarity and details.

Honor 8C

Honor 8C

The Honor 8C also runs on the same Snapdragon 632 chipset and the performance is more or less acceptable in that price range. The phone also has a similar notched display and dual cameras at the back. What makes the phone special is the gradient colour finish in the body and the fact that it comes with GPU Turbo enabled which improves select games like PUBG Mobile to a great extent, making the Honor 8C a good buy for those with a budget of less than Rs 10,000. The Honor 8C might just be the best phone for gaming under Rs 7000 or so thanks to GPU Turbo. The rest of the package is entry-level through and through. Plastic body, dual cameras, and the likes. The phone does offer good battery life of over a day but there's no fast charging. It also comes with a big display that makes content consumption better.

Lenovo K9

The new Lenovo K9 packs in a lot of features. A 5.7-inch 18:9 HD+ display, 13+5MP dual cameras both at the back and the front, and a 3,000mAh battery. It also has a stock-like Android UI making the Lenovo K9 one of the most feature-packed budget phones on offer today. It ticks off all the boxes in the spec-sheet and also looks good doing so. We especially like the stock Android interface that’s only there in the Nokia phones in that price range, making the Lenovo K9 a good phone to consider under Rs 10,000. The Lenovo K9 makes sensor for those looking to flaunt their device without spending too much. The phone offers enough to talk about with dual cameras on both sides and a polished design, albeit on plastic. The phone also performs well enough without too much of a lag. The apps and games do take some time to open but that's the same for most budget phones.
